The eleventh public hearing of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States was held May 18-19, 2004, at New School University in New York City. The two-day hearing examined the response of local and federal emergency response departments on September 11, 2001, and considered how to improve these critical functions in the event of future terrorist attacks. In this statement, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, describes what his Administration is doing to "keep New York City safe and free," and offers recommendations for national homeland security policy going forward.
