Alternate Title: 9/11 Commisssion, Eleventh Public Hearing: Statement of Alan Reiss , May 18, 2004

The eleventh public hearing of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States was held May 18-19, 2004, at New School University in New York City. The two-day hearing examined the response of local and federal emergency response departments on September 11, 2001, and considered how to improve these critical functions in the event of future terrorist attacks. In this statement, Alan Reiss, Deputy Director of Aviation at The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, provides information about "the life-safety systems in place at the World Trade Center on September 11 and how they, along with the extraordinary and heroic efforts of both uniformed and civilian personnel contributed to the one of the largest, safest evacuations of tens of thousands of workers and visitors at the World Trade Center on that fateful morning."
