This collection of essays written by students of the U.S. Army War College, focuses on the challenges facing the defense establishment in the United States at the start of the 21st century, especially those challenges facing national defense policy and military strategy. The purpose of these essays is to provide helpful insights into those trials that will prove useful to both military and civilian policymakers. The topics covered in these essays include: 1) regional focus for Europe, Northeast Asia, and Afghanistan, 2) maritime issues, 3) homeland security, 4) principles of war, preemption, and joint operations, and 5) nuclear arms control after September 11, 2001.
