White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs gave a press briefing May 1, 2009. Included in his remarks were the regular "week ahead" announcements and a note regarding the status of Ali al-Marri, who according to the document "had been held without charges". The press fielded questions mostly related to the retirement of U.S. Supreme Court Justice, David Souter and progress of his nomination process. Additionally, President Obama joined the press briefing to give a brief statement and answered some questions himself regarding Chief Justice Souter's retirement.
