This United States Regulatory Commission Backgrounder includes a background of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) reexamination of the role of emergency preparedness for protecting the public near nuclear power plants following the accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in 1979 and following the events of September 11, 2001. The backgrounder also discusses federal oversight; emergency planning zones; emergency classification; protective actions; evacuation, sheltering, and the use of potassium iodide; and terrorism and emergency preparedness.
