ABSTRACT

Department of Defense Directive 3000.07: Irregular Warfare (IW)   [open pdf - 102KB]

This directive "establishes policy and assigns responsibilities for DoD conduct of [irregular warfare (IW)] and development of capabilities to address irregular challenges to national security in accordance with [DoD Directive 5100.1, 'Functions of the Department of Defense and Its Major Components,' August 1, 2002]." The directive recognizes that IW is as strategically valuable as traditional warfare and establishes method to increase DoD IW proficiency. Enclosed with the directive is a list of IW related responsibilities for the various Under Secretaries and Assistant Secretaries of Defense, Secretaries of the Military Departments, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Commanders of the Combatant Commands, and a glossary of definitions for the purposes of the directive.
