The crucial fact documented in this report is that the health of the people in the regions surrounding the test site was poor. The authors compiled data relating to incidences not only of neoplastic diseases but also cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, nervous system dysfunctions, etc. Heavily exposed settlements were compared with control villages. Of note, however, is that not one case of acute or chronic radiation sickness was detected. The report's importance is that it thoroughly addresses questions about the cause(s) of the populations severe health problems. The authors' careful analyses of factors associated with increased incidence and/or susceptibility to disease are described in detail.
