"This DTM [Directive-Type Memorandum] establishes policy in accordance with DoD Directive 3003.01 (Reference (a)) for DoD use of civil SAR satellite assets under the authority of DoD Directive 5144.1 (Reference (b)). It improves DoD use of the international SARSAT System; this system aids in rescue and recovery of DoD personnel and in fulfillment of DoD responsibilities for support to civil rescue. This DTM is effective immediately; it shall be converted to a new DoD Instruction within 180 days. This DTM applies to OSD, the Military Departments, the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Joint Staff, the Combatant Commands, the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Defense, the Defense Agencies, the DoD Field Activities, and all other organizational entities within the Department of Defense (hereafter referred to collectively as the 'DoD Components')."
