ABSTRACT

NS/EP Implications of Electronic Commerce   [open pdf - 134KB]

This analysis focuses primarily on NS/EP issues related to recent activities within the Federal Government to incorporate EC into business operations. In particular, the NSTAC focused on how the transition to EC could affect the departments and agencies that conduct NS/EP functions. Currently, EC use among such organizations has been limited to the support of nonmission critical activities. However, as NS/EP organizations increase their reliance on EC for contracting, ordering and distributing essential supplies in support of the public welfare, national security posture, or any other NS/EP function, the security of these transactions will become more critical to NS/EP operations. As the NS/EP community transitions to EC for business operations, the departments and agencies should be alert to a number of issues that could affect how EC is implemented. This analysis reflects the importance of encouraging a broader awareness of NS/EP issues related to the introduction of EC. The NSTAC has found a lack of focus on NS/EP needs within these various entities. Therefore, there is a need to establish a focal point within the Federal Government to work with these various public and private organizations to increase their awareness of NS/EP issues related to EC.
