What are the Advanced Search options?

An Advanced Search allows you to retrieve more targeted results.

Option: all of the words (and)

• What it does: search for resources where all of the words appear
• When/how to use:
  • to search for a set of keywords that must appear in the resource, regardless of order
• Example:

Option: any of the words (or)

• What it does: search for resources where any of the words appear
• When/how to use:
  • to search for a set of key words that may appear in the resource
  • use this if there are acronyms, synonyms or spelling variations that would help with your search
• Example:

Option: "exact phrase"

• What it does: search for resources where the exact phrase appears
• When/how to use:
  • to search for a phrase that must appear in the resource, exactly as you have entered it
  • you can either enter an exact phrase in the basic search box by putting it in quotes, or you can enter it in advanced search without quotes
• Example:

Option: without the words (not)

• What it does: search for resources where these words do not appear
• When/how to use:
  • to focus your search by excluding certain terms
• Example:

Option: pub date from... to...

• What it does: search for resources within a specific date range
• When/how to use:
  • to narrow results to documents published within a certain period of time
